Tips on Rapid Email List Growth from A Beginner
If you are a newbie blogger like me, you might be thinking…what’s the big deal about email? Why are people always raving about this seemingly insignificant part of running a blog. Aren’t pageviews, fans follower and likes more important? In the words of Ruth Soukup, founder of the Elite Blog Academy, these are mere “vanity metrics” that could get you off track if you aren’t mindful of your real goals.
In my case, my goals are to reach my intended target audience, provide the most value possible and in the process, extra earnings from the quality content I provide.
The Internets are always changing and forever will be. The free-for-all social media used to be is also changing. Marketing is getting noisier and more cluttered by the minute. The reality of the matter is that your email list will end up being your most effective marketing channel. I can truly say with confidence that it’s the main money maker with my online presence.
In fact, it’s how I made $2,520 with my first affiliate launch. I beefed up my email list as quickly as I could then used Rosemarie Groner’s of the BusyBudgeter.com Core Affiliate Launch Strategy to more than quadruple my blog income for the month.
When the month closed, I was stunned from having gone from the usual $300-$500 month to over $2,500 in affiliate sales in one month.
I can’t believe I had shunned the mere idea of the email list without understanding it’s revenue-producing power!
Here’s what I did take take my list from 600 to 1,500 in a couple of months:
Invested in Tools
MailChimp was a great email service provider (ESP), but I needed more functionality and a service that was “sales” friendly. MailChimp is good to start off because it’s free for less than 2,000 subscribers, but if you want your list numbers to grow quickly, you have to make other plans.
I recently switched to ConvertKit for email which is very sales friendly, great for email courses and nurturing leads in general. I also added a few bells and whistles with Sumome (like a welcome mat, hello bar, etc.) It cost more money to add these services. But I had made up my mind that if I didn’t get the return on investment (in terms of revenue) in 1-2 months I would nix both services. So far, the ROI has been there!
Increased Opt-in Places
For some people, this is a no-brainer. It wasn’t as apparent to me that I would have to offer up more places for people to sign-up for my email list. Once I realized this, I added opt-ins all over my blog AND social media platforms. There’s pretty much no place you can escape them now: from scroll-down mats to pop-ups and content upgrade boxes, I’m all about getting ‘dat email address!
Created Lead Magnets
Rather than a simple, “sign up for updates” to prompt people to opt-in, I created a few short eBooks and checklists to “bribe” people to give me their email in exchange for something of value.
Clear Goal to Monetize
While this didn’t actually grow my list, it was very much the motivation behind my rapid email list growth. Sometimes I’d think to myself, “This is too much. I have too many opt-ins. Plus, they are annoying!” But then, I’d remember that people who REALLY want to hear from me won’t have an issue with this and will connect with me anyway. Once this goal was clear, I was able to use the strategies and tactics in Core Affiliate Launch Strategy to more than quadruple my blog income for the month.
