Free Things to do in Ponce, Puerto Rico for a Quick Trip

Turning Challenges into Triumphs in the South of Puerto Rico
This story is about visiting the south of Puerto Rico to run the San Blas half-marathon in Coamo. Half the fun was driving there through the island’s mountainous region and experiencing the cool, refreshing mountain air and beautiful streams and rivers of the central island zone.
We (me and mini-me) hit up Ponce first to check into our Airbnb. Then, we went over to Coamo to pick up my race packet. From Coamo, we doubled back to Ponce and proceeded to do the “free things to do in Ponce on a quick trip tour.)

Start Your Day at Plaza Las Delicias
Kick off your visit at the heart of Ponce—Plaza Las Delicias. (While I was there, there was a Ponce version of Carnaval going on!) This picturesque town square is surrounded by stunning architecture, including the iconic Parque de Bombas, a historic firehouse museum. It’s free to explore, and kids will love marveling at the bright red and black building. The plaza itself is perfect for a leisurely stroll, shaded by lush trees and filled with fountains that are a delight for children.
Visit Museo de Arte de Ponce (For Free!)
If you’re there on a Sunday, take advantage of free entry to Museo de Arte de Ponce, one of the best art museums in the Caribbean. Its impressive collection includes works from renowned artists, and it offers educational activities that kids can enjoy. While not every part of the museum may be suitable for young children, their free programs for families make it worthwhile.
Walk Along La Guancha Boardwalk
Though some areas of La Guancha are under renovation, this lively boardwalk remains a must-visit. You can watch boats, enjoy the ocean breeze, and even feed the local pelicans—completely free! It’s a relaxing spot where kids can run around, and nearby food stalls offer affordable Puerto Rican treats if you’re craving a snack.
Explore Castillo Serrallés Gardens
While entry to Castillo Serrallés itself has a fee, you can roam the serene gardens surrounding the castle for free. Offering panoramic views of the city, these gardens are a peaceful retreat. Kids can explore the paths and take in the scenery, giving you a chance to unwind after a morning filled with adventure.
End Your Day Watching the Sunset at Cruceta El Vigía
Wrap up your visit with a trip to Cruceta El Vigía, a historic cross-shaped observation tower. Although climbing the tower has a cost, soaking in the views from the outside and enjoying the historic grounds is completely free. The sunset from this vantage point is breathtaking and provides a perfect conclusion to your quick trip.
